BT Problems? You have alternatives & avenues of complaint.

British Telecom are still effectively a monopoly.

If you are having problems with them - you can do two things.

  1. Compalin
  2. Switch

Switch - BT Alternatives

http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=520886

These can often be cheaper and have better customer service.

Complain
www.btcomplaint.com - this will guide you through a lot of the issues.

Its time for BT to be split up - its not healthy having such a fat dinosaur dominating an industry so crucial to the UK Economy.

Digital Britain depends on the break up of BT - we need competition!

iTunes Users - How to Save Gigabytes of Hard Disk Space with 1 click

If you're an iTunes user that gets podcasts (and especially video podcasts) - this could save you gigabytes of hard disk space. It saved me about 20 gig!

iTunes has one default setting that could lead to every podcast you ever download being kept on your computer forever (until you completely run out of space).

Go to podcasts, make sure no podcasts are selected, then click Settings... at the bottom. Where it says "Episodes to keep" - if "All Episodes" is selected, every podcast you ever get will be saved. With vodcasts (video podcasts) being in the hundreds of meg, thats gonna fill up your had disk fast.

I select 2 episodes here (its up to you what you select). Then click on and bingo. The space might not be freed up straight away, but should after a sync or download.

Hope this helps you out - if it does please leave a comment - thx.

DIY iPhone Repair #FAIL - PROCEED WITH CAUTION!

I dropped my iPhone 3G and cracked the glass - but the touch screen still worked fine so for £30 ($50) I ordered the DIY glass repair digitizer from ebay (from iPhone Repairs UK).

They say its a difficult repair. Translate this to *its very easy to break your phone*.

The first thing I noticed on unboxing the repair kit was that in the instructions they say it takes 2 hours to fix. Two Hours. So its a pretty major task.

They then point you at a video - which is a good way to do things.

However, what they do not make clear is just how easy it is to break your phone - I 'broke' mine in 2 ways.

First - the screws are tiny. I stripped 2 of them - one I managed to get off but not the other.

Furthermore when levering off the LCD screen (which I thought I did VERY gently) I damaged it. This apparently is extremely easy to do - they dont make clear just how gently you have to do this.

So Im left with a semi-disassembled phone and instead of just a broken screen a broken LCD too.

Im going to send the lot to ipodrepairs.co.uk - they say they can use the part I bought & fix it all for £80 ($130). I will report back and let you know if they do a good job.

The conclusion? If your phone is out of warranty & needs fixing its probably best to just send it away to a company like the above (they could have fixed just the broken glass for £59). I don't think its worth the risk fixing it yourself - its very likely you'll break something.
